When Their Life Becomes Your Measuring Stick
Comparison becomes painful when someone else’s life stops being information about them and becomes evidence about you. This coaching question helps separate what you notice in someone else’s life from what you conclude about your own.

Comparison gets sneaky.
You see their relationship, career, body, home, vacation, or success.
Then somewhere along the way, information about their life becomes a conclusion about yours.
They’re ahead.
I’m behind.
They figured it out.
What am I doing wrong?
Their life may show you something you want.
That can be useful information.
It doesn’t automatically tell you that you’re late, failing, less successful, or doing life wrong.
And remember: you’re usually comparing your full-access, behind-the-scenes life with whatever portion of theirs you can actually see.
When you look at their life, what are you deciding about yours?
Their life can give you information.
It doesn’t need to become your measuring stick.
